Pérez advised this dramatic departure from the king’s plan because if, when Don John reached Lombardy, ‘the Low Countries are lost, or if the path to peace is blocked’, the mere fact that he had left Naples as ordered would earn the king’s confidence and gratitude; whereas if, by the time he got there, ‘it seems that the arrival of Don John in the Netherlands in person’ could save the situation, continuing on his journey would be ‘a great service to God, to the Crown, and to his brother, and would win credit for himself’. In addition, ‘as the world turns, you and your master would not be in a bad place for your own purposes and those of your friends’. Pérez’s filled his letter with a conspiratorial ‘we’:

Whatever may happen, in my opinion we must immediately obey and leave; and having done that let [Don John] respond, or ask, or advise whatever he wants, although let it all be for the advancement of the venture, not for personal items. For the rest, we may hope that Time will provide us with a thousand possible courses of action.12
